Details on this mission type
Full name Ocean colour imagery from GEO
Definition This type of mission designates VIS/NIR imagers specifically designed to work on low-level signals (because of low reflectivity of ocean) and narrow bandwidth channels to address specific water features. Observation of aerosol is needed for atmospheric correction. Geostationary orbit.
Relevant instruments and their contribution

The sorting column describes how the instruments, by design, have the potential to contribute to certain pre-determined capabilities, assuming nominal operation of space and ground segments. For this particular capability, instrument performance is considered to be driven by:

  • the channel bandwidth, controlling the suitability to retrieve Chlorophyll concentration, Colour Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM), Diffused Attenuation Coefficient (DAC) and Suspended Sediment Concentration of open-ocean waters only, or also in coastal zones.

 Sorting criteria and colour code:

  1. -
  2. Radiometer with >=7 VIS channels with bandwidth between 10 and 20 nm.
  3. Radiometer with 5 or 6 VIS channels with bandwidth between 10 and 20 nm.
