Details on this mission type
Full name Instruments covering 700-1300 nm
Definition NIR range, to observe clouds, surface, the oxygen A-band around 760 nm, and the water vapour band around 940 nm. Involved instrument types: • Moderate-resolution optical imager, • High-resolution optical imager, • Cross-nadir scanning SW sounderl, • Limb sounder.
Relevant instruments and their contribution

The sorting column describes how the instruments, by design, have the potential to contribute to certain pre-determined capabilities, assuming nominal operation of space and ground segments. For this particular capability, instrument performance is considered to be driven by:

  • the instrument type
  • the possible coverage of the O2 and/or H2O bands.

The rating criteria are as follows:

  1. NIR spectrometer for aerosol and vegetation.
  2. NIR hyperspectral radiometer for fine analysis of vegetation.
  3. NIR radiometer covering the O2 and H2O bands around 760 and 940 nm, respectively, flown in LEO; OR NIR radiometer covering the O2 or H2O bands around 760 and 940 nm, respectively, flown in GEO or Molniya.
  4. NIR radiometer flown in LEO; OR NIR radiometer flown in GEO or Molniya; OR High-resolution NIR radiometer for vegetation.
  5. Limb sounder for atmospheric chemistry and aerosol in the high troposphere and low stratosphere.
